Earwax Removal
We offer ear wax removal at our clinic for anyone experiencing partial
or complete impactation of ear wax causing occlusion. Earwax is mechanically extracted
with sterilized tools such as loop curettes,
alligator forceps, micro suction or syringing. Although ear wax removal is
relatively straightforward, it is a procedure that requires extra training,
experience, skill, and care.
Earwax removal is a quick process and completed within a few minutes. In case of
severe or hard impactation, the earwax is softened prior to removal in clinic using a
natural-ingredient based solution to facilitate removal.
To help prepare for your appointment at home, an oil-based lubricant
(e.g. olive oil) is recommended to soften the impactation, preferably overnight on the
day before your appointment.
If you are getting a hearing test, your ear will first be examined to check for
earwax as moderate to extreme wax blockage can confound your hearing test results.
If earwax needs to be removed prior to testing, you will be informed of the ear
condition to obtain consent for removing the earwax before proceeding with
the hearing test.
Before the Procedure
Inform your audiologist/hearing care professional if you are currently taking any
medication or have had any medical conditions (related to or not related to the ear)
that may affect the procedure or outcome of earwax removal. This is usually provided
on your patient intake or procedural consent form.
